“Maybe you could talk to me
like one of the potted plants by the window
so my growing pains don't feel so tough
and I know what it feels like to be unfinished
but still enough
how were you so hurt
but so gentle now?
what a beautiful Life that you've carved out
I'm grateful for the space you've shared with me
I hope you'll see it makes me so happy
to admire you by your side
and never be asked to hide
I hope I give you more than I take
I hope I photosynthesis your light into something great I hope you see my growth and it makes you proud even when some of my leaves turn brown”
Art Print, original art was acrylic on canvas by CC Shong, featured in the book “Dark Corners” by the art, accompanied with this poem.
“Water and a walk
you can't take me home
but you can lead me under
orange streetlights
oranges or peaches?
swaying cadence
sharp velvet tongues
smiles with a stranger
the rhythmic click
of boots to pavement
that hypnotized me
we amble on
we ramble on
carrying the weight of conversation on the canopy of chemistry
that has us strung together
ties of fate have us spun together an intricate web of dynamic rope in case of falling
in case of hope
just in case you thought
there was a chance of choice
your concerns have been voiced
the stars have heard them
and they're laughing
because the arrogance of humans
is honestly baffling
in all the galaxies the stars have aligned for you to have this moment tonight yet somehow you question
what is the goal
just take a breath
and take the stroll”
Original Art, by CC Shong, acrylic on canvas, framed. Featured in a book of poetry by the artist with this poem.
“I seem to like being hurt
that's how I manage to break my own heart on any given Monday
I'll crack it open like a pomegranate
to display the juicy details of my affections watch as the seeds get taken for granted precious fruit falling to the floor
discarded
so incredibly unguarded
this haven is still good for something
the good enough to house a broken heart it's a sanctuary for the dark
there's no complaints
as juices spread to the floor
and somehow there's still more
this abnormal fruit seems almost infinite as it's going
it wasn't finished yet
but there's comfort in knowing
that this agony won't fade
maybe you saw it and kept it for days maybe this fruit was so tart in your mouth that you're starting to taste my hurt now and now a seed is planted in your chest insisting on pomegranate blooms in spring that's the beauty my broken heart brings you'll feel no relief
you'll be haunted by these
seeds in your chest
and even when the roots have spread
you won't be dead
you'll be a walking reminder
of the things that I said
you'll be kinder
in the spaces that you tread
in the spaces we meet
it's good to know
I hurt for something”
Original art, acrylic on canvas by CC Shong. Featured in the book Daybreak by the artist accompanied by this poem.
“Sometimes things begin
and they are beautiful and magical then suddenly comes
a bitter end
but that is not how I see this
no
I see this more like
a skein if thread
that promised to be a tapestry
yes the promise was intricate
and the progress was beautiful
but the project simply remains unfinished
and there are no plans to continue”
Acrylic on canvas painted and featured by CC Shong in their book “daybreak” accompanied by this poem:
Contemplating suicide
on the floor of your shower was a particular low for me
I was hoping
this feeling would dissipate
and circle the drain
instead it surrounds me
like standing water
the fact that
a major hurdle in this act
is not that I would not do it
but that I could not
break open one of your razors the the notion that
if I did not do it correctly
it would be a scar on my arm but not in your life
perspective is funny perspective is fuzzy now
the heat of the water burning my back
I welcome that
it grounds me
it places me back into this reality
a pain release
a brain release
I feel water draining around me I feel relief
not disappointment recognition
a change in my disposition I save myself
I choose life
I choose sleep
Acrylic on canvas featured in the artists book “daybreak” with this poem:
For nearly quite some time
I've lived in her shadow
and I finally think
I know how she feels
living up to impossible expectations given less than
minimum return being told
you're given the world all the while
there's nothing in your hands He's holding on to hurtful words until he's just drunk enough
to laugh them off
about the kitchen
and your place in it
and how you could never actually do it all
how you owe him everything
and your support system is so small you owe him
what he paid for
so stay pretty
like a doll
and your presence
is required
put on your best behavior and I know that
she was tired
it's exhausting
being everything
for a man
who's a provider
only providing one thing separate lives
on the same sheets
and for a while
the only escape was sleep but he lets go for a while so you take it to the streets you get a drink
and meet a smile
remember what it feels like
to be admired
notice your life is so small
it's a cycle
it's a spiral
but you take to
bar time laughs
and sad truths
about how lucky he is to have you now it's her shadow that I'm back to and if history repeats
he will blame it all on me
When he explains
that I was boring
he'll forget to mention
that's what he wanted me to be when he says I was distant
he'll forget to mention
that I begged
for his time and attention
until my lungs were weak
her shadow
became my backbone if I'm going to be lonely I'd rather be alone
Acrylic on canvas, featured in the artist’s book “Day Break” with this poem:
The first one is tearing like satin it frays
any sign of tears
and there are water stains
it's looking pretty rough
with every attempt
at sewing it back together
but if you look at the details
you can recount the whole history and why it's best
it quits beating
The second is quartz
it's crystal clear
and when it broke
it cracked right down the center the chips that flew away still look like glitter there's no fixing it but it's beautiful in a sad way forever half a heart
These two hearts
both beat in my chest
the cathedral of truths
can't seem to admit
what is next
you can't heal
if you won't feel
I still hold onto broken pieces praying for a miracle
I need to make room
for my new heart
but then I have to let go
and that's the hardest part
Acrylic on Canvas, The cover art to the artist’s book, Daybreak. It is featured with this poem by the artist:
daybreak
We used to stay up talking until daybreak
we used to go for walks and
hold hands through tough conversations
we used to be close
lately you feel like a ghost
even diving into the intricacies
of our friendship
feels like doing too much
you gave up
not that you owe me anything
that has been on repeat for months
but I am holding you to the promises you made
It doesn't matter if you've forgotten them
I remember
and memories hold a certain magic
you know that
that's why your grasp so tightly to the past
you think you can white knuckle it to make it last you think you can white knight your way
through these interactions
but somehow get scared away
by someone equally as kind
I promised you too
I promised if it felt like
there wasn't enough room for me
I would leave
well I'm suffocating
you put me in a box
in a dark corner
and I do not do well in confined spaces
I cannot accept walking in such different paces especially in completely different directions I'm tired of quietly fighting
I'm tired of the dark lighting
It's starting to all look like a mistake
it's time to go
it's daybreak
acrylic on canvas, art featured in the artist’s book “Daybreak” with this poem:
I can admit that I'm not fireproof and I burned for you
in a lot of ways
that fire is still burning through
all I can breathe in is the ash
and to get out alive
I can't keep turning back
you cannot be the one who hurts me
and the one who heals me
and while your fire burns
maybe don't stand near me
because I get so enticed by your heat
that I forget when it's time to retreat
time isn't all I need
but when I ask for anything else I can't breathe did you ever burn too?
how does this feel for you?
do I mean something to you?
I can't choke out these words
I can't forget the chords
the chords to the songs
we were dancing all night long to could we dance to something new? are you taking in the view watching me burn for you
I fight for your spark
even as mine burns out
even as I'm consumed with doubt even as my body becomes embers all I want to do is remember
and it's not hard to do
after all
the fire is still burning through
acrylic on canvas, featured in the artist’s book of ekphrastic poetry “Dark Corners” with this poem:
Falling organically into kink is a thrill while there is comfort in conversation there's an intoxication
in lack of expectation so when we fell into a rhythm of discovery in the moment and still hit every mark
I wanted to linger in the dark I'd let you tame me I'd gladly break
because this flow of our bodies can't be a mistake
your strong hands that hold and patiently guide
can keep me kneeling
to fill you with pride
I want to misbehave
and I probably should
but for that fucking smile I want to be good
Acrylic on Canvas, created for the poet Kristian Zenz to accompany this poem:
St. Clair’s Cathedral
It was something she said, One August afternoon That stuck like glue
And had me in a bind.
Her stare to arrest,
Her hair of auburn Absorbing the lake’s blue, Spilling like a landslide Her sinister smile fades An ethereal haze Punctured plastic rays That white wave, I ride And she’s so surreal
The eye of her hurricane, A shock to the landscape. I can no longer hide. Under the sheets,
My body is ablaze
In Saint Clair’s craze Gently in the good night
A paralyzing phase,
The blood boils
In erotic turmoil
Gently in the good night
On her knees,
My body is amazed
By Saint Clair’s craze
And I’m going blind!
I can’t move,
And I have no power
Disillusioned
By loving her
And I’m going blind—
I can’t move.
But I’ll climb that tower, covered in ivory Vines brushed behind her ears
Listen closely, and hear my breathing Rising out of fear
It’s my heart beating to a rhythm infused Bouncing back off brick walls
It’s her toxic groove
That I slide right into
My body is pinned down,
But my spirit will rise
And inside her cathedral,
I will release this vice
Which poisons my mind.

Dry Sediment
We seek to remind them why
A mere quarter century ago,
They were newly wed.
She works down to the bone, Sharing the water’s flow.
But he remained at home,
And sediment became exposed. Her incoming stream
Dissolved into waste.
It’s his, but only she gives
As her willingness to be late Enveloped his space.
Everyday the same monotone chain Of chores and the grocery store Builds that dam higher:
An effort of entitlement.
And on those same days,
An employed, medicinal fate
Takes away all she gives
And the lines from the surgical mask darken her face.
A similar, corroded chain
Of dying dogs on the linoleum floor Builds that dam higher:
Her reservoir of resentment.
A damning dry spell came,
And she could no longer breathe Yet it was he who had no pulse On the internal bleeding
Her blood began to boil,
And her heart aimed to attack
For the flow was blocked
And his empathy was fleeting
We try to remind them why
A mere quarter century ago,
They were newly wed.
She didn’t marry a martyr,
But a beggar can play pretend
As they’ve forgotten avowals said. We sought to no longer harbor Regret and make amends
For their empty river bed
But son and daughter
Can no longer play pretend
At the sight of dry sediment
the son and daughter
Can no longer make amends
For it’s an empty sentiment.
Acrylic on canvas, featured in the artist’s book “Dark Corners” to accompany this poem:
Dark Corners
I have always been fascinated with darkness true I once found it frightening but you will find in time that I am so so brave furthermore the darkness speaks to me
in ways I still struggle to understand
you are safe here you are in danger
you are hunter
you are prey
Having been slinking across town preying in a way seeing who will play
and pull me into a dark corner
your secrets are safe here
I thrive in this space
the crevice of intimacy in conversation
that walks the line between confessions and flirtation this game of words I love to play
with advantages gained in eye contact
and a brush of fingers
balancing risk
to reward
to resignation
another dark corner
another prey
another elaborate match of words passions twisting in the sheets of language as our tongues battle as lovers
for who will be on top
my lover, my hunter
I fall unsuspecting prey
this match of wit was a surprise
here's hoping you stay
let the darkness of this corner
speak to you the way it speaks to me
let my velvet cadence tempt you
please don't be afraid
this sparring goes for hours
the ending is in sight
but the comfort if my dark corner is lost once touched by daylight
acrylic on canvas, featured in the artists book of ekphrastic poetry “Dark Corners” with this poem:
For a while
Collide like two stars
cascading across the sky
because we were both hurt just enough that you were almost mine
I wanted somewhere to land
I thought it could be you
so I offered my hand
and into me you flew
but you held a secret
and chose to exile
so all of our moments
only lasted a while
